¶ History:¶ YouthBorn in Castle Rivercliff after a very hard labor, Penelope was the only one of Josephine Durand's children to live a year. Josephine was very petite and many of her children were wounded in the birth. Penelope was preputure, and while it made a few rough months she was able to thrive, this first act of determination would color her whole life. At first her father Yannik was cold to this infant, fearing that again he would lose another child after her second birthday his attitude switched feeling safe that he could care about his new heir. ¶ Adolescence¶ True like an ArrowBeing the only heir first Yannik tried to give Penelope a well rounded education, until one day she was sparing with a sword and the parry pushed too far and nearly cut off her foot. Bellringer Mendicants prescribed that she stay in bed for a season to let the foot heal. Quickly getting frustrated she ordered the house staff to pull the bed to the courtyard so at least she could learn the ways of fighting by sight. Yannik learning of this, stormed down and demanded she be taken back to her rooms. Turning away, he heard his cloak rip, Penelope had shot an arrow pinning his cloak to the ground. Seeing her smug look, and knowing that she would have her way he let her practice her archery from her bedroom window. ¶ Childish GamesAs she aged she went to her schooling in the imperial capital of Oldwyn staying with her cousin Naomi Rivers (at the time she was of House Rose.) While they spent a lot of time together Naomi was not a friendly sort, she would play little tricks on Penelope, that grew in instisty over the years. One day she had House Rivers guards, grab her tie her up and throw her out of the castle, with no papers or staff to prove who she was. With no recourse she starting talking to the common folk, hearing their woes and giving them ideas on how to help. In less then a week she had built up a little business of writing letters for the poor, when she was told that there was a secret way in to Oldwyn. She was taken down though a pitch dark cave and led through a maze that she used a mnemonic to remember. It ended by a metal ladder that took her up though the Sedi Well. Thanking her guides she returned triumphant to the halls of House Rose and she was never picked on by Naomi Rivers again. Their relationship reached an equilibrium about the time that the young Emperor took Naomi to his bed, being first consort the estate for House Rose was empty and Penelope returned home to her loving family. ¶ AdulthoodShe returned to find Timoté Durand engrossed in house affairs he was seneschal of House Durand, while Yannick enjoyed fishing. With in a year of her return her mother was pregnant again and tragedy struck Josephine she and the child died in labor. Yannick was unconsolable, doing nothing but walking the halls. Timoté Durand had taken the day to day operations of the house even more than he did as seneschal. As time passed and Yannick withered, he spent time with is daughter talking about their shared love. He grew sick last winter and died. Penelope went to Timoté and asked to see the house records as she was taking over, he first evaded and then publicly said that Yannick named him heir. Peacekeepers were brought in and a 4 month trial was held at Oldwyn. With the deliberations still up in the air, the call for all banners to go to a conclave at Mistwick to deal with the saffron society both claimants went to show that they see themselves as the true rulers of House Durand. |
